John Frank comes to Corporate DevelopMint after 14 years with the prestigious Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. John served as the Healthcare Division Director of this $500 million foundation, the majority of whose assets are dedicated to improving healthcare programs in North Carolina through grants, direct special initiatives and outreach activities.
John’s real gift is bringing seemingly disparate groups together to forge alliances and work toward realizing a shared vision. He did so in two notable and sweeping healthcare initiatives. Project IDEAL was a diabetes management program which awarded grants to over a dozen North Carolina hospitals to measure trust as it relates to self-care. Though each hospital was able to construct its test models in a way that worked best for its community, the overall goal of better understanding diabetes patients’ needs and likelihood of seeking treatment was embraced and achieved by all the participating hospitals.
With the $10 million Project SELF (Smoking, Education, Lifestyle, Fitness), John was integral to the creation of a program that provided philanthropic support to dozens of municipalities and hospitals to help them tackle chronic health issues in a whole new, proactive way. Instead of merely treating the state’s ever-growing chronic health problems—especially among the lower income populations—John collaborated with health officials and hospitals to focus instead on prevention and healthier lifestyle choices.
Prior to his work with the Reynolds Trust, he was the president of Lexington Memorial Hospital in Lexington, NC. This 94-bed acute/general hospital was also home to a large home-care agency, retail drug store, several medical practices and a thriving foundation. In John’s eight-year tenure of leadership, the Hospital’s active medical staff was increased from 28 to 45, and the Hospital added an outpatient diagnostic and surgical center, expanded surgical suites and began a large satellite clinic. Lexington Memorial was lauded for its exceptional service, receiving a score of 99% from the Joint Commission on accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, even as it enjoyed continued growth and an 8-10% operating margin. Under John’s leadership, then, the hospital thrived from both a quality and an efficiency standpoint.
Throughout his career, John’s aim has always been to ensure exemplary healthcare service to the people of North Carolina. He did so as Assistant Administrator at Alamance County Hospital in Burlington and as Administrator at Davie County Hospital in Mocksville and at Mercy Hospital South in Charlotte, where he served for seven years.
His experience will serve Corporate DevelopMint’s healthcare clients well. He understands what transforms a good hospital into a great one, what drives hospital staff to pursue the very highest levels of care, and how philanthropy can often be the key toward creating a superior healthcare experience.
John’s dedication to the healthcare industry does not end with his employment. He sits on the boards of a number of professional organizations including the NC Medical Society Foundation, and the NC Institute of Medicine, and Team Scholarship Funds. John has also been honored for his service to his industry; he received the Ronald H. Levine Legacy Award for Public Health and the NCHA’s Award for Meritorious Service.
John is a graduate of Wake Forest University’s MBA program and has a degree in accounting from Benjamin Franklin University in Washington, DC. A veteran, John received his honorable discharge from the US Navy Hospital Corps in 1968.
Corporate DevelopMint is thrilled to welcome John onto our team and we are certain that our clients will find his experience and counsel extremely valuable.
